Skipping a Violin Size?

Q: I have a 12-year-old daughter who is in transition from a 1/2 sized violin. I have received vendor suggestions that she can step into a 4/4 violin - based on her long arms. However, her teacher is concerned that she may not be able to handle one and so suggested the move to a 3/4 sized one.point.

Would you suggest that I should go 3/4 or 4/4?

- I just purchased a Bon Musica shoulder rest and I really don't understand how to fit it properly.

- The Bon Musica appears too small/tight for my instrument yet I bought the right size

Upper Bow Arm Moving

Q: Are you supposed to hold your upper bow arm/shoulder absolutely still, or just move it a little? Mine moves a little, and I'm wondering if that is proper.

Stiff Bow Shoulder

Q: I am a beginning violinist and I seem to have trouble keeping my bowing arm loose. My teacher said my upper arm is to tense, and this affects the playing. Is there anything I can do to loosen up? Any input would be most appreciated.

What's the difference between a Violin with a 1- or a 2-piece back?

Q: Can you tell me the difference between a full back and a split back in terms of instrument quality, strength, sound, etc. Also, is the belly a single piece?

Which Bow to Buy for a Player who Presses Hard?

Q: Thanks for all the information on the bows, Rhiannon. More often than not, I have a problem of pushing down on the bow too hard. This seems to be a problem with me in many things, like holding the club too tight in golf. I am concentrating very hard to stop this bad habit.

Would a stiffer, or softer bow be more to my advantage in this situation?
